Showdown: boxing evening Saul Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and other fights. Alvarez defeated Chavez and agreed on a fight with Golovkin Saul Alvarez Julio Cesar Chavez watch the fight

On May 6, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, an interesting fight took place between two of the most famous and experienced boxers in the 1st middle weight category (up to 69.91 kg) - the fight between Saul Alvarez and Chavez Julio Cesar, Jr.

The fight will take place in the intermediate weight category of 164.5 pounds (74.6 kg).

WBO title fight. Defense of the WBO junior middleweight title (Alvarez's 1st defense).

The fight between Saul Alvarez and Julio Chavez Cesar began traditionally with reconnaissance. Alvarez made the first good hit. The first three rounds were quite calm and Alvarez confidently dominated the fight.

In the fourth round, the beating of Chavez began. Alvarez felt his strength and began to increase the number of punches. Chavez literally circled the ring like a first-class fighter to defend himself and during the entire round he delivered no more than ten weak direct blows, of which only one was accurate.

In the fifth round, the picture of the fight did not change, except that in this round Chavez landed even fewer punches, namely only six punches, none of which reached the target.

The sixth round proved that the fight would be boring and one-sided. Alvarez deliberately went into the corner to the ropes and urged his opponent to box, but he still practically did not hit and delivered no more than twenty punches per round.

Nothing new happens in the seventh round either. Chavez lands only three punch combinations and Alvarez lands countless punches. In this fight, Alvarez boxed so freely and easily that he didn’t even get tired and didn’t sit down between rounds.

The rest of the battle went like this. After this fight there were no positive impressions left, but a lot of questions arose.

How did Chavez manage to get to this level of fight? Why didn’t Alvarez manage to knock out his opponent, or at least knock him down in such an easy fight? In this fight, Alvarez won every round and by a huge advantage.

Chavez should hardly be called a high-class fighter, but in the current confrontation he can win due to his superior size. Julio Cesar has a net advantage over Alvarez in height and has a more impressive reach.

However, cutting weight could be his problem considering the fact that he hasn't dropped below 168 pounds in four and a half years since he fought Sergio Martinez in 2012. Even if he manages to make the weight, questions will remain as to whether he was fully committed to his preparation during training camp?

Chavez is talented, but not as talented as Alvarez. Many believe that Canelo does not have polished boxing skills, but he had no problems with Brian Vera, Matt Vanda, Billy Lyell and Sebastian Zbik. All of these fighters have a fairly mediocre technical level and each of them created difficulties for Chavez.

If Chavez intends to win, he must rely solely on physical superiority. Luckily for him, he dominates greatly in anthropometry. This fight, of course, cannot be compared with the fight between Julio Cesar and Andrzej Fonfara in 2015, when Fonfara, who has approximately the same dimensions, absolutely destroyed him and forced him to surrender. Sergio Martinez looked more than worthy throughout the eleven rounds of the battle with Chavez, which took place in 2012, but in the last three minutes he fell victim to the physical superiority of his opponent. And if Chavez still has the energy to land killer punches in the later rounds, then why can't he shake Canelo early in the fight?

Whether he will be able to do this or not - you will find out from our online video broadcast.

  • Live broadcast of the fight Golovkin - Canelo Alvarez:...

Today, early in the morning of May 7, a boxing evening took place, in which two Mexicans: world champion in junior middleweight (up to 69.9 kg) according to WBO Saul Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and former WBC world middleweight champion (up to 72.6 kg) Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) decided to test ourselves which of them is better.

Let's immediately note that Chavez Jr. was not ready for a fight of this level, but first things first. Bookmakers were practically confident that Alvarez would win. Thus, the bookmaker bwin accepted bets on the victory of Saul Alvarez with odds of 1.17. Chavez's victory was estimated at 5. During the fight, in a one-sided fight, Canelo beat Chavez Jr. over 12 rounds. According to the judges, Alvarez did not give his opponent a single round - 120-108, 120-108, 120-108. Despite his size advantage, Julio Cesar was unable to take advantage of his best sides, and as a result, Canelo was more effective both at long range and at close range. The former world middleweight champion commented on his devastating defeat to BoxingScene:

“The key factors in this fight were speed and distance. I didn't feel powerful because I was exhausted. I wasn’t able to throw as many punches as I would have liked,” Chavez Jr. said.

As a rule, when one story ends, a completely new, more interesting one immediately appears. After the fight, the whole world froze when the world middleweight champion according to WBA/WBC/IBF/IBO Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) and Saul Alvarez agreed on a fight. The long-awaited meeting will take place on September 16 and will be held in Las Vegas.

“I’m very happy, now it’s a different story,” Golovkin said. — In September there will be another story, “Big Drama Show”. I think everyone is excited that the fight will take place in September. Canelo looked very good today and he is absolutely the biggest test of my career.”

In turn, Saul Alvarez immediately said.

“I am very happy with this opportunity, this fight will give me a chance to prove myself. The fight with Golovkin will be very difficult, but as I said before, Canelo is the best because he fights the best,” Alvarez concluded.

But as a well-known Russian expert in the world of martial arts, blogger Alexander Belenky stated to the Vesti.kz portal, he does not really believe whether this fight will take place.

“I will believe in this fight when it happens. We don't know any details. A contract has been concluded or a contract has not been concluded? Are there any conditions under which a contract comes into force or does not come into force? Are there any legal options to jump off? We know absolutely nothing. But there is hope that the fight will actually take place, because no one pulled their tongue. Everyone has long been accustomed to the fact that the battle is postponed, postponed, postponed. They probably decided that now was the best time to organize such a big money fight. So they arrange it. After the fight between Golovkin and Jacobs, they decided that Golovkin was not as scary as he was painted to be. And we came to the conclusion that it was possible to organize this fight.”

The American TV channel HBO immediately, on this day, officially presented a promotional video for the upcoming fight.

Note that Saul Alvarez had 51 fights in the professional ring, of which he won 49 (34 by knockout). In his other two fights, Canelo drew with Johre Juarez (2006) and lost on points to Floyd Mayweather (2013).

In addition to the main bright fight of the evening, the fight card was full of bright names: here is the former IBF world middleweight champion David Lemieux (37-3, 33 KOs), and the Argentine puncher Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs), who rose in the welterweight division (up to 66.7 kg), as well as undefeated American featherweight prospects (up to 57.2 kg) Joseph Diaz (23-0, 13 KOs) and Manuel Avila (22-0, 8 KOs).

Let's take a moment to look at the other fights on the fight card. A very interesting fight between David Lemieux and Marcos Reyes, considering that the former IBF middleweight world champion has repeatedly stated that he would like to fight Saul Alvarez and that a fight with Marco Reyes (35-4, 26 KOs) is a chance for a fight with Canelo.

“Our goal is to meet Saul. I think that's what the fans want to see. This fight will take place, but we will see when and where,” said David Lemieux.

So, David Lemieux beat Marcos Reyes for 10 rounds in a rating fight. This victory was Lemieux's 38th career victory.

Let us remind you that David met Golovkin in the ring in October 2015 - the fight ended with the Kazakh’s victory by technical knockout in the eighth round.

Another fight deserves attention: Lucas Matthysse vs. Emmanuel Taylor.

Former junior welterweight world title challenger Lucas Matthysse fought his first fight after losing to Ukrainian Viktor Postol back on October 3, 2015. After the fight, the Argentine took a break due to health problems.

In the fight with Taylor, the Argentine boxer took the initiative from the very beginning of the fight and knocked down his opponent in the fifth round. Now Matthysse has 38 victories (35 ahead of schedule) and 4 defeats. Taylor has 20 wins (14 early) and 5 losses.

Saul Alvarez and his girlfriend

Saul Alvarez and Shannon de Lima

I’m always afraid to oversleep the fights that are broadcast live from America, since in our time they take place around six or seven in the morning, if we talk about the main fights. However, at the moment I sincerely regret that I did NOT sleep through the fight between Saul Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which took place in Las Vegas, when it was still Saturday in backward America, and in our progressive America it was already Sunday, and did not turn on the TV, the fight was barely over.

Initially, I assumed that Chavez would turn out to be a more serious opponent for one of the best boxers in all weights, Alvarez, than many thought, and, although he would not be close to victory, he would last all twelve rounds. I was right about the latter, but many others were right about the rest.

However, on the eve of the battle, I, too, was already in the camp of these many. The fact is that I desperately did not like the way Chavez looked in the last days before the fight, including at the weigh-in. As I wrote somewhere on Facebook, there was a clear impression that all Alvarez needed to do to win was just stand on the sidelines and wait for Chavez to fall, since for 47 minutes (twelve rounds with breaks) he was definitely on It won't last on your legs.

The fight took place in the improvised weight category up to 164 and HALF pounds - 74.6 kg. I don’t know why it was impossible to round up these 227 g for good measure. However, Chavez hasn't weighed this little in almost five years. He's a big guy, and it was clear that he would have to drive really hard.

He, of course, drove away, which you can’t do for the sake of good money (we, who are forever without money, don’t know this), but it was not easy for Chavez, judging by his retracted cheeks and bulging eyes. It's not easy at all.

And then there was a fight. More precisely, a massacre in which Chavez strikingly resembled a training bag in two ways: firstly, he himself practically did not hit, and secondly, he did not fall. The latter is worthy of admiration, I say this absolutely seriously, because when the fight began, I thought that it would last three or four rounds, no more.

Chavez was kind of liquid. From the very beginning, he looked exactly like a racer who hasn't had time to recover after weigh-in. He did not try to stop Alvarez, rushing towards him like a bull towards a heifer, at the distant approaches, although he was 10 cm taller than his red-haired compatriot. Chavez only tried to take everything that was flying at him for protection. As a rule, this was successful, but not always. During the entire first round, he carried out only one sane left blow to the liver, but besides this he worked like a mailbox: he only received “letters”, but did not send them himself. As if there was nothing.

Alvarez, on the other hand, non-stop delivered accented blows, which, even though the defense brought joy to his opponent, was no more than the waste products of a flying bird falling on his head, they only “flopped” much more painfully. By the end of the second round, Chavez's face was completely red.

He desperately disliked everything Alvarez did, and least of all he liked his uppercuts.

Chavez continued to fight the way a driver drives who is not sure that he will have enough gas before filling up: very economically and carefully. If I say that in the third and fourth rounds he landed one targeted blow, although this would be an exaggeration, it would be a small one. Alvarez ironed Chavez as if he had stolen his bicycle as a child, and now the hour of reckoning has come.

In the fifth, an already beaten Chavez added some variety with a long, sweeping right hook, but he was still getting beat up before and after that. In the sixth round, Alvarez either got tired, or simply wanted to show that his opponent could not do anything at all, and stood at the ropes, going into almost silent defense, and when he got tired of it, he went on the attack again.

The seventh round surprised me in that it came. Honestly, I didn’t expect Chavez to last this long, and even less did I expect that he would hear the final gong. Alvarez, as usual, bombed him, but this time Chavez at least responded with something. In general, it has long been clear that he is trying to do what he almost succeeded five years ago in a fight with Sergio Garbriele Martinez. He beat Chavez all the way, but in the last round Chavez unexpectedly knocked him down and almost finished him off.

Rounds eight through twelve, I think, were disappointing for both of them. Alvarez because he was never able to knock down Chavez, and Chavez because he never got the chance to break him in. However, he was clearly happy about the final gong. In general, the last five rounds went generally the same as the previous seven. Alvarez beat, and when this happiness tired him, he stood at the ropes in order to revive again after a pause. Chavez responded only occasionally, but still became a little more pleased with himself from round to round.

Well, then it was time for the most interesting part. The WBA (super), WBC and IBF world champion in the up to 72.6 kg category, Gennady Golovkin, who was sitting in the ring, was invited into the ring, and, apparently, the show was planned, since he came from afar, as if they were going to their own fight, and what was happening clearly was not a surprise to him. And then it suddenly became clear that his fight with Alvarez was scheduled for September. It’s just for the sake of batting your eyes like a blonde at that moment, and it’s worth watching the fight that just ended.
