For the third time, the World Hockey Championship will be hosted by two countries at once. This time it is France (Paris) and Germany (Cologne), and they won this right from another European duo - Latvia (Riga) and Denmark (Copenhagen).

In total, Germany hosted the world hockey championships 7 times, France - only four, and the capital - Paris - actually watched the strongest teams live for the last time 65 years ago.

Emblem 2017 World Hockey Championship presented in the form of a silhouette of a hockey player. But this is not an abstract player, but the former German national team goalkeeper Robert Müller, who died of cancer at the age of 28.

As before, the tournament will be held according to the scheme where 16 participants are divided into two groups of 8 teams. Each team plays each other, and the first 4 teams advance to the playoffs.

The Russian team is in Group A and will play in Cologne. Among the main competitors in the first stage are the USA, Slovakia and Sweden.

In the previous World Hockey Championship, which took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the Russian team took third place, losing to Finland in the semifinals. Gold went to Canada, which defeated the Finns in the main match 2:0.

The 81st IIHF World Championship will be held in 2019. Its duration is from May 5 to May 21, 2019. For the third time it is held by two countries - France. France will organize matches in Paris, Germany in Cologne.

The last time Paris hosted the World Hockey Championship was a long time ago - 65 years ago. In 1968, at the 1930 World Hockey Championship in France, all matches were played except the last three. They were held in Austria and Germany. Germany has hosted seven Ice Hockey World Cups, most recently in 2010.

Choosing a venue for the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship

Initially, four countries submitted an application to host the World Hockey Championship in 2019, and they teamed up in pairs. These are Latvia with Denmark and Germany with France. before this, the Germans and French applied separately and competed with each other. Then they came to an agreement, apparently calculated all the pros and cons and put forward a joint application. In this case, Latvia and Denmark were unable to provide worthy competition and dropped out of the competition. It was decided to give away the right to host the 2019 World Hockey Championship at a meeting of the International Hockey Federation on May 17, 2013 in Stockholm.

Who is participating in the 2019 IIHF World Championship

The countries France and Germany participate in the World Cup in any case; they are the hosts of the tournament. They already qualified for the championship, taking into account the results of the 2019 World Cup. The teams of Italy and Slovenia in the first division of the 2016 World Cup were in the first two places, they are also participating. These four are added to the 12 teams that qualified for the 2019 World Cup. This makes 16 teams.

Rules for the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship

All 16 teams are divided by 8 into two groups. The group stage of the tournament, as always, takes place at the World Cup in a round-robin system. The teams that take the first four places in the group advance to the playoffs of the competition. The team that took the last 8th place in each group is relegated to the 1st division of the 2018 World Cup.

It is interesting that the national team from Denmark, having taken eighth place in the group, will not be demoted in qualification to the 1st division at the 2018 World Cup. It is the country that organizes the 2018 World Hockey Championship. The team that takes penultimate seventh place in the group will be relegated from the top division.

Mascot at the 2019 IIHF World Championship

The official mascot of the 2017 World Hockey Championship was chosen to depict characters from European films and comics. These are the Gauls Asterix and Obelix, they are known all over the world. IIHF - The International Hockey Federation has approved this mascot.

The organizers of the 2017 World Cup in the German hockey federation consider the choice of the mascot to be very successful. These characters are popular, especially in Germany and France. Souvenirs with their image should be snapped up. Obelix and Asterix should further attract attention to the competition.

The World Hockey Championship is undoubtedly one of the most popular spring events in the global sports family. Every year the best teams gather to compete on the ice, and all the attention of television cameras is focused on the players, coaches and referees in striped uniforms. Hockey is always a tough and at times brutal men's fight; it is one of the fastest sports; passions on the court sometimes boil so high that the referees have to separate the players. The world championship is famous for its high competition, because at each tournament five or six teams compete for victory.

The next championship may present many surprises and, probably, one goal will deprive the fate of the trophy.

Where will the Ice Hockey World Championship take place?

The next hockey game will take place in the German city of Cologne and the well-known wonderful city of Paris. The application of France and Germany looked more preferable than the joint candidacy of the Danes and Latvians. The IIHF confirmed the 18-vote margin in May 2013. Copenhagen and Riga were forced to capitulate when it became known that the French and German sides had decided to join forces. Germany is hosting the championship for the eighth time, France for the fourth. The playing venues for the championship will be the Lanxess Arena in Cologne and the AccorHotels Arena in Paris. Each city will take one group.

About sports facilities

"accommodates 18,500 spectators, the name comes from the sponsors, the chemical production of the same name. Not only hockey matches are held here, but also handball matches, boxing battles and even e-sports competitions.

"is a colorful complex where, in addition to sports, concert events are also held. This architectural miracle can accommodate 17,000 people. An interesting fact: the first concert held here was the performance of the Scorpions group.

2017 World Hockey Championship calendar

At the moment, there is no exact schedule for the 2017 World Championship, but the rules of the competition have long been known. The teams will be divided into two groups, with 8 teams playing in each group. They will play their matches in a circle, there will be a total of seven matches at the group stage. The best four teams advance to the quarterfinal stage according to the principle: first against fourth, second against third “ice squad”.

The two teams that took last place will change their registration and go to the lower division. Only the Danish national team is not in danger of relegation, since the next forum will take place there. After the quarterfinals, two semifinal matches follow, their winners will fight for the title of the strongest team.

The losers of the ½ finals will play in the consolation final for bronze medals.

Group A(Cologne) will look like this:

  • Germany;
  • Russia;
  • Sweden;
  • Slovakia;
  • Latvia;
  • Italy;
  • Denmark.

IN group B(Paris) will face off:

  • Canada;
  • Finland;
  • Czech Republic;
  • Switzerland;
  • France;
  • Belarus;
  • Norway;
  • Slovenia.

For those who don’t know or have forgotten, a hockey match lasts 60 minutes. Let us remember the phrase from the famous song: “the magnificent five and the goalkeeper.” On the ice, as a rule, there are two defenders, three forwards (two of them are wingers, one plays in the center) and a goalkeeper. Gross violations will result in players being sent off for a two-minute penalty. Teams play three periods of twenty minutes each; if the best player is not determined during this time, the lucky winner will be determined in a five-minute overtime. If it ends in a draw, then we will have a shootout series. Shootouts are the equivalent of a penalty kick in football.

In the playoffs, fans will not have such a luxury, since the opponents will play a 20-minute OT, if the strongest is not determined during regular time, the OT will take place until someone scores the long-awaited goal.

Contenders

At the World Hockey Championship we will face a confrontation between sixteen top teams:

  • Germany

Let's start our acquaintance with the hosts - the “German Bundesteam”. The team will be coached by formerly famous hockey player Marco Sturm. Germany is one of the most experienced teams in the Old World; the Germans are thirteenth in the world rankings. The team won prizes at world championships twice, back in 1932, and also in 1976. Their most recent achievement is 4th place at the home tournament in 2010, at the same time the record for attendance at the championship was set: 77 thousand 803 people were present in the match against the USA in Gelsenkirchen.

The main stars of the team will be players from the National Hockey League: goalkeeper Thomas Gray (Islanders), defensemen Corbian Holzer (Arizona) and Christian Ehrhoff (Chicago), as well as team captain Marcel Gotz. As we see, seven years after their successful performance, the Germans are returning to their “home walls” again.

  • Russia

The Germans' group opponent will be one of the main "contenders" for success - the Russian national team. The Russians won the main trophy 5 times, taking silver and bronze awards three times. In the ranking, the team is in second place; in 2016, the “red car” won bronze, beating the Americans, but this cannot be called a great success, since the tournament was held for the Russians in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Head coach Oleg Znarok has a huge number of star performers at his disposal, including Columbus and Colorado goalkeepers Alexander Vishnevsky and Semyon Varlamov and some of the best attacking lines in the NHL: Alexander Ovechkin (Washington), Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit), Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) and Vladimir Tarasenko (St. Louis). Fans are always demanding of the national team and in 2017 they expect a repeat of the success of 2014, when the team triumphed.

The Russians will compete with American hockey players in the group stage. The Americans managed to win the tournament only twice in its long history. The last success dates back to 1960. John Haynes’s boys haven’t won a championship award for a long time; the last time this happened was in 2010, so we’re sure the USA will be hungry for victories at the upcoming World Cup. Particular attention should be paid to Patrick Kane, Zach Parise, Corey Schneider and the Los Angeles Kings' top goaltender, Jonathan Quick.

  • Sweden

The Swedish national team has qualified for the World Hockey Championship 67 times. The Swedes are nine-time winners of this tournament, “Tre Krunur” (from Swedish - three crowns) won in 2013 in Stockholm. Sweden is one of the most famous teams; they are in third position in the ranking. The team includes such stars as: Niklas Bäckström, Henrik Sedin, Nikolas Krunval and the legendary “masked man”, Henrik Lundqvist.”

  • Canada

All analysts and hockey fans will call the Canadian team the clear favorite of Group B, as well as the championship. The Maple Leaves took the trophy from Russia in 2016 and will probably not want to betray themselves in 2017. In Canada, hockey is the number one sport and the most legendary players Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux received the honor of immortalizing their game numbers, which means that no one else will wear the red and white colors with the numbers 99 and 66. By the way, only 1976 for the Canadians professionals started playing. It's scary to imagine how many titles they would have won if they had done this earlier. The team can send a lot of stars to Germany: Sidney Crosby, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Jonathan Toews and many others. It is not for nothing that many experts argue that Canada can easily use two equivalent compositions at any time.

  • Finland

Another favorite of the tournament is Suomi. The Finns played in the final in 2016 and have one of the most promising and promising squads in the world. This year the Finnish team defeated the Swedes in the final of the Junior World Championship. Hockey schools, as well as the well-developed Finnish league, greatly contribute to the progress of youth hockey in the country. Finland is a two-time world champion (1995,2011), 1% of the country's population are professional hockey players. In the team it is worth highlighting the most experienced Miko Koivu and “collar” Niklas Bäckström, both hockey players play overseas. Left forward Mikael Granlund is also a high threat. Underestimation of the Finns can ruin many teams, because Suomi are famous for their hot character and intransigence.

  • Czech

Next, let's talk about the Czech team. The Czech Republic became champion six times. Having replaced the coach who brought the 2010 triumph, Vladimir Ruzicka, with Vladimir Vuytek, the Czechs' game pattern changed little, but they were unable to get past the quarterfinal stage, having stumbled against the Americans. Now the Czechs are in a lull with star performers, but due to the team spirit, this team is capable of a lot.

  • France

Another host of the future forum is the French national team, which lacks stars from the sky. Hockey is not in the first place for the French and, perhaps, holding competitions of this level will affect the development of this wonderful winter sport. “Le Bleus” (from French - blue) is constantly balancing on the brink of the top division and the bottom, so their main task will be to maintain registration and in their “native land” this is very important to do.

If there are no sensations, then the teams of Slovakia and Switzerland will be strong middle peasants and will “drink the blood” of the leaders, the teams of Latvia, Belarus, Italy, Slovenia, and Norway will most likely try to fulfill local tasks and remain in the top division. The Danes, as mentioned earlier, will not abandon the elite.

Youth World Championship

There will be many interesting events at the 2017 World Youth Championship and it is no secret that the talents who successfully played there will be included in the main national team. The tournament will take place in Montreal and Toronto, Canada. It will begin on December 26 and end on January 5 of the next year. Finnish hockey players became world champions in 2016, beating their peers from Russia. Participating in the tournament in Canada will be:

  • Canada;
  • Finland;
  • Sweden;
  • Russia;
  • Czech Republic;
  • Slovakia;
  • Switzerland;
  • Latvia;
  • Denmark.

Several significant events took place at the 2016 championship. For example, the young star of the Finnish team, Patrik Laine, was one of the best players in the youth team, and then was awarded a place in the symbolic team of the adult tournament. Also performing well in the youth tournament were Swedish goalkeeper Linus Södrström, American defender Zach Werenski, Finns Olli Juolevi, Esse Puljujarvi and US forward Austin Matthews. It is safe to say that the brightest personalities at the U20 winter championship will appear on the ice of Cologne and Paris.

Well, we went over the most important aspects on the eve of the hockey festival. It will be a fantastic spectacle when the strongest masters of the “ice show” take to the ice, millions holding their breath and waiting for the puck from their favorite team.

The 81st Ice Hockey World Championship 2017 will take place in Germany and France. The tournament starts on May 5 and ends on the 21st with the final in Cologne. This tournament will be the third to be held simultaneously in two countries. The world championship games will take place in Paris and Cologne. We will tell you in more detail which arenas and where the 2017 World Hockey Championship will be held.

Why in two countries

Initially, France and Germany submitted a separate bid to host the 2017 Hockey World Championship. However, in 2012 it was decided to join forces and hold a common tournament. This joint application from France and Germany was able to outstrip the double application from Latvia and Denmark with a clear advantage. The advantage of Germany and France was the existing infrastructure, while in Latvia and Denmark it was necessary to urgently reconstruct the ice arenas.

Germany has already hosted the world hockey championships seven times. The last time Germany became the host of the championship was in 2010. France has hosted major tournaments four times, but the last time the championship was held was in 1968. All games are scheduled to be held in Cologne at the Lanxess Arena and in Paris at the AccorHotels Arena. The capacity of these modern hockey stadiums is 18.5 and 17 thousand respectively. Initially, it was planned to hold the games in the Parisian Bercy Arena, which has a capacity of 15 thousand spectators. However, it was subsequently decided to move the games to the AccorHotels Arena.

The organizers note that more than half of the tickets have already been sold, so there are guaranteed to be no problems with filling the stands. Taking into account the capacity of the ice arenas, it can be argued that the 2017 championship will be a record for the number of fans attending the championship games. According to the organizers of the tournament, holding it in France will significantly increase interest in hockey in this country.

Championship regulations

In accordance with the tournament regulations, 16 teams will take part in it, which will be divided into 2 groups. Games will be played in a round-robin manner, after which the first four teams will advance to the playoffs. The distribution of teams in the playoffs is standard - the winner of group A plays with the fourth team of group B. The teams that take the last eighth place in their groups are directly relegated to the first division. Let us only note that the championship is scheduled to be held in Denmark in 2018, so if the national team of this country takes last place in the group, then the team from 7th place in this group will be relegated to the lower division.

In Cologne, in accordance with the approved schedule of the 2017 Ice Hockey World Championship, 34 games will take place. The city will host Group A matches, two quarter-finals and semi-finals, as well as the final and third place game. Paris will host 30 games, including two quarter-finals. The organizers promise to stagger the start of the games in two cities, which will significantly increase the television audience of the championship. Distribution into groups is carried out taking into account the current IIHF ranking.

In 2016, the championship was held in Russia in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Canada confidently won the world championship, beating Finland in the final match. Third place went to the Russian team, which beat the USA in the consolation final. At the 2017 championship, the main contenders for the title will also be Canadians and the Finnish team. The strongest teams can be fielded by the Czechs, Slovaks, Russians and Americans.
